Severian Lowell is an upcoming S-Rank Wind Attack Agent expected to join Zenless Zone Zero in Version 3.3. He is an on-field CRIT DPS who builds Flowing Breath through Basic Attacks and Perfect Dodges before spending it on a powerful enhanced Basic Attack.
This ZZZ Severian guide covers his current build, skills, W-Engines, Drive Discs, stat priority, teams, Mindscape Cinema, and materials overview.

Rank: S-Rank
Attribute: Wind
Specialty: Attack
Faction: Public Security: Metropolitan Order Division
Role: On-field Wind DPS
Expected release: Version 3.3
Expected banner: Phase 2, unconfirmed
Severian rewards players who continue attacking while reacting to enemy strikes. Correctly timed Basic Attacks and Perfect Dodges generate the resources needed for his strongest attacks, giving him a more active playstyle than a DPS who only waits for Stun windows.
For his expected release phase and the latest rerun information, see our ZZZ 3.3 Banners guide.
The current recommended Severian build is:
W-Engine: Cage of Forbidden Sins
Drive Discs: 4-Pc Dawn's Bloom + 2-Pc Woodpecker Electro
Disc 4: CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG
Disc 5: Wind DMG Bonus or PEN Ratio
Disc 6: ATK%
Substats: CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG > ATK% > PEN > flat ATK
Skill priority: Core Skill > Basic Attack > Chain Attack > Special Attack > Dodge and Assist
CRIT Rate is normally the safer Disc 4 choice because Severian's Core Skill already provides substantial CRIT DMG. A CRIT DMG Disc becomes more practical when his W-Engine and substats provide enough CRIT Rate.
Severian's kit converts defensive timing into offensive resources. His main rotation revolves around Flowing Breath, Wind Rider, Flickering Shadow, and his enhanced Basic Attack.
Severian's Core Skill increases his CRIT DMG and allows certain Basic Attacks to avoid incoming attacks when timed correctly.
A normal Perfect Dodge, a well-timed Basic Attack, or the automatic dodge provided by Flickering Shadow can generate Flowing Breath and grant Wind Rider. When Wind Rider is available, switching Severian onto the field triggers his Entry Skill.
His Additional Ability activates when another squad member is an Assist Agent, a Stun Agent, or belongs to the same faction. It increases Severian's ATK after he enters combat or switches onto the field.
Severian's regular Basic Attack has four consecutive hits. The fourth hit includes a dodge window, allowing him to avoid an attack without ending his offensive sequence.
He can currently store up to 120 Flowing Breath. Once he reaches 100, holding Basic Attack consumes 100 Flowing Breath and activates Azure Wind Shadow Hunt, his main enhanced attack.
Save this attack for a useful damage window instead of spending Flowing Breath while the enemy is moving away or the team's buffs have expired.
Severian's EX Special Attack deals Wind damage and grants Flickering Shadow, giving him additional protection against incoming attacks.
Holding the EX Special input consumes more Energy and releases additional wind blades. Use the held version when the enemy is Stunned or committed to a long animation. The shorter version is safer when Severian could be interrupted.
Using his EX Special Attack also activates the additional Basic Attack bonus provided by four-piece Dawn's Bloom.
Severian's Chain Attack currently generates 35 Flowing Breath. His Ultimate generates 100 Flowing Breath, immediately giving him enough resources to use his enhanced Basic Attack.
A basic Severian rotation is:
Severian's recommended upgrade order is:
Core Skill > Basic Attack > Chain Attack > Special Attack > Dodge and Assist
Upgrade his Core Skill first because it controls his CRIT DMG bonus and several important interactions involving Perfect Dodge, Flowing Breath, Flickering Shadow, and Wind Rider.
Basic Attack is the next priority because Azure Wind Shadow Hunt is one of his main damage sources. Chain Attack also has strong value because the same category includes his Ultimate, which deals damage and immediately generates 100 Flowing Breath.
Special Attack should be upgraded after these skills. Dodge and Assist can be raised last because their main utility does not depend entirely on their damage multipliers.

Cage of Forbidden Sins is Severian's current signature W-Engine and his best overall option.
It provides CRIT Rate and increases his offensive power after a Basic Attack hits an enemy. Its current passive increases ATK and allows Severian's damage to ignore part of the target's Wind RES.
The activation condition fits his normal rotation because both his regular and enhanced Basic Attacks are central to his damage. Its final name and effects remain based on current pre-release information.

The Brimstone is a strong S-Rank alternative for players who already own it.
Its passive builds ATK stacks through Basic Attacks, Dash Attacks, and Dodge Counters. Severian regularly uses these actions, allowing him to maintain the effect without significantly changing his rotation.
Because Severian already receives a large ATK increase from his Additional Ability, The Brimstone may offer less relative value than a CRIT-focused option. However, it remains an effective general W-Engine when his signature is unavailable.

Starlight Engine is Severian's most accessible A-Rank option.
It increases ATK after the wearer launches a Dodge Counter or Quick Assist. Both conditions work naturally with Severian's Perfect Dodge and Entry Skill gameplay.
Starlight Engine does not provide CRIT stats, so players using it will need more CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG from their Drive Discs.
Four-piece Dawn's Bloom is Severian's leading current Drive Disc set because it directly increases Basic Attack damage.

Its four-piece effect provides an additional Basic Attack bonus after an Attack Agent uses an EX Special Attack or Ultimate. Both actions already appear in Severian's normal rotation, making the effect easy to maintain.
Two-piece Woodpecker Electro provides CRIT Rate, helping balance the CRIT DMG supplied by Severian's Core Skill.

Two-piece Puffer Electro is an alternative for a PEN-focused build, particularly when Severian is paired with Rina and uses a PEN Ratio Disc 5. Woodpecker Electro remains the safer general recommendation.

Because Severian has not been released, avoid forcing a weak four-piece set solely to complete the bonus. Pieces with the correct main stats and strong substats may perform better while farming.
Use the following Drive Disc main stats:
Disc 4: CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG
Disc 5: Wind DMG Bonus, PEN Ratio, or ATK%
Disc 6: ATK%
Wind DMG Bonus is the general Disc 5 recommendation. PEN Ratio becomes more valuable when the rest of the team also supplies PEN, while ATK% is a usable alternative when it has significantly better substats.
For substats, prioritize:
CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG > ATK% > PEN > Flat ATK
Avoid stacking CRIT DMG while leaving Severian with inconsistent CRIT Rate. His Core Skill already supplies CRIT DMG, so a balanced CRIT ratio will usually produce more reliable results.
Severian generally wants a Stun Agent and a Support or Assist Agent. His teammates should complete their setup quickly so that he can remain on the field and continue building Flowing Breath.
The following teams are current pre-release recommendations rather than final damage rankings.
Severian | Norma | Astra Yao |
Norma provides Daze, damage support, and off-field contributions that allow Severian to maintain his field time. Her Quick Assist interactions also help Severian return through his Entry Skill.
Astra Yao provides broad offensive buffs without requiring a long setup. This makes the team comfortable for Severian's extended Basic Attack rotation.
Prepare Wind Rider before using the next Quick Assist whenever possible so that Severian receives the full benefit from his Entry Skill.
Severian | Dialyn | Sunna |
Dialyn offers fast Stun buildup and creates reliable openings for Severian's enhanced Basic Attack and held EX Special Attack.
Sunna supplies offensive support through a more concentrated buff window. Complete her setup before switching to Severian, then use his strongest attacks while her effects remain active.
Try to enter the Stun window with close to 100 Flowing Breath. Arriving with insufficient resources forces Severian to spend part of the window rebuilding his enhanced Basic Attack.
Severian | Anby | Nicole |
Anby and Nicole provide a more accessible Severian team.
Anby activates Severian's Additional Ability through her Stun Specialty and creates openings for his longer attacks. Nicole groups enemies and reduces their DEF, increasing Severian's damage during her debuff window.
Nicole's debuff does not last long, so prepare Severian's Flowing Breath before completing the team's setup. This allows him to use Azure Wind Shadow Hunt while the DEF reduction is still active.
Severian's Perfect Dodge, Wind Rider, Flickering Shadow, and Flowing Breath mechanics are available at M0. Additional copies improve his damage and resource management but are not required for his base rotation.
Under the current pre-release data, M1 increases his Flowing Breath capacity, improves resource generation from his Chain Attack, and strengthens the interaction between his Entry Skill, Chain Attack, and enhanced Basic Attack.
M2 restores a large amount of Flowing Breath when Severian enters combat and grants PEN Ratio after a Perfect Dodge or enhanced Basic Attack. It currently appears to be the most practical early stopping point for players planning to obtain additional Mindscapes.
M4 adds more ATK and improves Decibel generation after key Basic Attacks. M6 heavily strengthens the final hit of his enhanced Basic Attack and provides additional Flowing Breath recovery.
Most players should obtain Severian at M0 and test his dodge-focused playstyle before spending more Polychromes on Mindscapes.
Severian's current upgrade requirements include:
For exact quantities, farming locations, and the recommended prefarm order, see our complete ZZZ Severian Materials Guide.
Severian is worth considering if you want a Wind main DPS with an active, reaction-based playstyle. He is best suited to players who enjoy reading enemy attacks, triggering Perfect Dodges, and converting defensive timing into offense.
His value increases if your account already has a suitable Stun and Support combination, such as Norma with Astra Yao or Dialyn with Sunna. He also has usable W-Engine alternatives, so obtaining his signature is not required for his main mechanics.
He may be less attractive if you dislike Perfect Dodge gameplay or already own several well-built Attack carries. His kit can function without perfect execution, but reacting to enemy attacks is an important part of his damage flow.
If Severian is on your pull list, check your current Polychromes and pity before setting a budget. Players who still need more Monochromes can top up Zenless Zone Zero through UUTOP before his banner arrives.

His basic rotation is simple, but consistent Perfect Dodges are needed to reach his full potential.
Yes. His Basic Attack, Chain Attack, and Ultimate can also generate Flowing Breath.
Get Severian at M0 first, then wait for final damage comparisons before choosing between them.
You can prepare Dennies and Agent EXP materials, but his other requirements may still change before release.
Severian is designed for players who want an active Wind carry rather than a DPS who only attacks during Stun. Build Flowing Breath, use Perfect Dodges to prepare his Entry Skill, and save his enhanced Basic Attack for the right damage window.
Good luck with your Signal Searches, Proxies, and may Severian arrive early.
